My heart breaks for the Ertel family and I am so sorry for the pain in your hearts. Mrs. Ertel… that I still called her even when she would giggle and say “ You can call me Alice you know!” I have some of my greatest memories shared between our 2 large families. So many children and so much love and chaos!!!!! Hanging out in your basement in Kitchener … Camping trips ….and visits between Countries. I am so grateful that Mr. and Mrs. Ertel always “showed up” for our family in good times snd grief. You are all in my prayers for the Lord to give you the PEACE that surpasses all understanding…… love and prayers Julie (Fecca)

Butch & family. We have fond memories of conversations and swims with Alice if she didn’t have family visiting or was busy reading books with Butch. Alice helped me get my start at quilting with a tshirt quilt as she had recently made some for her grandkids. She had lots of great advice! Our thoughts are with you all at this sad time.

We are very sad to hear about Alice. She and you, Butch, were such a meaningful pat of our lives when we were young. Seems like a part of those memories are gone now, but not forgotten. We send our prayers, but we are no longer able to travel to be with you at this time, but you are very close to our thoughts and prayers.

Naomi the kids and I were deeply saddened to hear about Alice. We all have memories of her visits to Florida. Cross said she taught me how to play that card game he forgot the name. Naomi loved talking and learning about how our families met and hearing about all her children and grand children. Peyton said she was always so nice. I have a ton of memories as a child of Alice and she kept me abreast of how everyone was doing through the years from her visits.
I am forever grateful of the love Alice had for my parents. They cherished the visits for Butch and Alice.
I pray for comfort and peace for the entire Ertel family. Xoxo

I have been so very fortunate to have had such a wonderful Nana. I already miss calling to talk about the books we’re both reading (or better yet, doing it in person on the Beach), being on the same team for Christmas Euchre tournaments and getting to share in special moments (trips across Canada or elsewhere, going to shows in Toronto or Stratford, meeting for walks, visiting on Zoom birthday parties).
It is so sad to think that Nana will not get to be at my wedding this summer. I am so thankful that she and Pa were there to celebrate when the engagement occurred on Sauble Beach at sunset (and what better place could there be?). In thinking back to that day, I remembered a conversation between Nana and Pa (after Adam and I shared that I’d just said yes), and it well represents that for my Nana, loving and supporting her entire family was a given.
Nana: Where is that sparking wine we have?
Pa: Oh sorry, it’s not in the fridge.
Nana: Well we should put it in now.
Pa: How late are you staying up?
Nana: Until the wine is cold.
Nana, thank you for staying up well past sunset to wait for that toast. I’ll be thinking of you when I sip my bubbly at the wedding.

Our hearts go out to Butch, Mark, Anne, Matt, Kirsten, Johnny, her brother Hewton and all of the grandchildren.
Alice was one of my first friends in 1979, when we moved to Kitchener. She was always willing to help, always seemed interested in our family stories and very kind. Our children became friends and have fond memories of the times spent together.
I loved her trips to Vero Beach to visit sometimes with Kathy and Butch but most of the time alone. Many card games, board games visits with my friends and relatives. We'd have so much fun.
I was looking forward to my trip to Syracuse this summer. Alice had said that she and Butch would come down to see me for a visit. Now we will visit in Prayer. May you rest in peace. Forever friends, Ro Fecca

My sincerest condolences to all of the Ertel’s. Memories of ‘Mrs. Ertel’ come from the 70’s and 80’s: her clowns; baking, including ‘Chocolates’ at Christmas (I still have a hand written recipe from her), homemade bread, long runs with Anne and I, and her laugh! I’m sure a little bit of Alice lives on in her kids and all of her grandchildren (quite a crew!).

I remember many "a day at the beach" turning into an "evening of cards" at the turquoise and white cottages you used to rent. At those same cottages, I remember Alice giving me a shot of rye to cure a headache. Then there was the time we visited your house in Kitchener and the kids went downstairs to make popcorn and cranberry garland for the Christmas tree. The trips to Ottawa in May for marathons, March Breaks in Myrtle Beach, weddings and wedding receptions...all memories that are decades old, but seem like yesterday.
Dad tells us that sometimes music helps. Not sure you're fans of Maroon 5 (hell, I'm not sure I am), but Memories is a good tune.
"Toast to the ones here today
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
And the memories bring back, memories bring back you."

This is one of the saddest days of my life. When I think of Alice so much comes to mind.Of course her love of quilting is foremost ... she was the glue that kept our quilting group together. There's also so much more ... a good friend, laughing, delicious food, days at the cottage and the lake, gardening, curling, family stories and words of wisdom. I know something every day will remind me of my dear friend Alice. Thankfully, there all the wonderful memories.

To Butch and all Alice's family. We are so sorry for the loss of your very special lady. She was one of a kind and we loved her from first we met. That was in 2015 and would be at a curling rink function. We were newbies and it wasn't long before we were chatting with Alice. Conversation quickly connected Alice's maiden name Fair with ours and I have a sister Alice as well. Oh and our homes are within a 10 minute walk of each other at Sauble Beach! We never did find a relation connection but lots of fun trying to piece things together. Sue had many morning walks with Alice and I always looked forward to her return and hearing what story's Alice had shared on the walk. Sue loved Alice and her wit. She was remarkable. When Sue and I were out for a walk or bike ride, it would almost always include Grey in case Alice and Butch were poking around the yard or bringing clothes in off the line. It wasn't long before Sue would be chattering away with Alice, and Butch and I the same. Alice was a dear, caring lady and we will miss her. We truly understand our good fortune to have known Alice even for a short time. Strangely it feels like we had known her for a long time. That is a good thing we feel. She has left a permanent place in our hearts. God Bless her Soul and may she Rest in Peace.
Our Prayers are with all of you.

Thank you so much for everything Nana. Thank you for everything you have given me over the years. Your quilts will forever hang on my walls so that your memory will forever fill my home. I am so greatful for all of the experiences we shared together. Thank you for teaching me so many card games, how to use a sewing machine, how to take care of plants and for the weekly FaceTimes. Thank you for being my grandmother. I’m really sad to see you go but I’m appreciative of all the wondeful years I got to spend with you. Seeing how many people were by your side this weekend makes me certain that you will never be forgotten. I love you Nana.
